Sam Houston Elementary School welcomes parent/family participation in the education of their children. Research has shown that parent involvement results in increased students success, increased parent and teacher satisfaction and overall improvement in the school climate.
Sam Houston Elementary provides the following opportunities for parents and families to be involved and informed in their child’s education:
Annual Title I Meeting
The annual Title I meeting informs parents and family members of the school’s participation with Title I and other Title programs. During the meeting the requirements of the Title I program are explained to the parents verbally and in written form. Parents are briefed on their right to be involved in the school and are encouraged to do so through various suggested activities.
School – Parent Compact
The school parent compact is created to provide a written commitment for all involved to acquire a high level of success for our students.
Grade Level Orientation
Meet the Teacher Night makes it possible for parents to get an overall view of expectations throughout the year by the principal and classroom teacher.
Grade Level Family Nights
Family Nights are held throughout the year of further enhance the family’s understanding of the importance of being involved and knowledgable about their child’s school experience. Some examples of Family Nights include:,
Kindergarten – K SMART Karnival
First Grade – Treasure Hunt
Second Grade – Bingo for Books
Third Grade – Are You Smarter Than a Third Grader? (TCAP)
Fourth Grade –Poetry Night
Parent Teacher Communication
Agenda books are used school wide to communicate with parents. Conduct evaluations are logged, as well as, teacher notes, assessments, academic concerns, attendance, and newsletters. Parents are asked to communicate with the teacher and school throught the use of the agenda book.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent Teacher Conferences allow for yet another way for parents and teacher to form an inportant partnership to share information and concerns as well as creating new learning experiences for the students. Parents are strongly encouraged to visit the school, communicate with staff and schedule additional conferences as needed. Students progress is monitored through midnine weeks progress reports, report cards, TVAAS reports and projections, and other methods such as phone calls, letters, checklists, reading logs, school and class newsletters.
Parent Teacher Organization
The Sam Houston PTO meets to plan fundraisers, discuss concerns, plan upcoming events, and solicit community involvement.
Volunteering
All parents are encouraged to become active in our school. Donnations of time and talents from parents are needed. Parent volunteers help with reading programs, book fairs, reading to classes, tutoring students and field trips. Parents are invited to participate in holiday celebrations, American Education Week, classroom projects and/or programs, Read Me Day and other litercy events.
Parents are notified of these and other opportunities through newsletters, meeting invitations, phone calls, postings on the outside school signs, and some may be advertised in the local newspapers (Lebanon Democrat and Wilson World). |
