2nd Grade News
May  14 – 18

***This week we will be working on autobiographies and timelines in our classroom.  If you have any pictures that you do not mind sending in, we would love to have them.  They will not be returned like they come in, but they will be sent home in the timelines.  We may need to cut some of the pictures.  We need pictures from different times in their lives, from the time they were born until now.  Thanks so much for your help in advance!  I know you will love their finished timeline projects!

Spelling – This week we will be working on the endings “ed” and “ing”.  We will not have a Spelling Test this week.  We will do other spelling and language arts activities with our words.

Reading – We will be reading different stories this week and practicing skills from the school year.

Math – We will be creating arrays to solve multiplication problems with addition.

This week our “I can” statements are:

*I can gather information to answer questions.
*I can create arrays to solve multiplication problems with addition.
*I can explain the meaning of selected patriotic symbols and landmarks of Tennessee.

Homework – This is SAT 10 testing week.  Please follow the SAT 10 testing schedule below showing what skills will be tested on what days.  Please study and review SAT 10 practice tests that match the skills students will be tested on the next day the night before testing. I have sent home all of the students’ SAT 10 practice tests. Thank you for your support in assuring your child’s success with SAT 10.

Spelling, Reading, & Math – This week we will be not be having a spelling test, basal reading story, or daily Magic Math class.  We will be taking the SAT 10 test.

SAT 10 Testing Schedule:

Tuesday: Word Study Skills, Spelling, and Language (Monday night’s homework is to study and practice these skills)
Wednesday: Reading Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension (Tuesday night’s homework is to study and practice these skills)
Thursday: Listening and Mathematic Procedures (Wednesday night’s homework is to study and practice these skills)
Friday: Problem Solving and Environment (Thursday night’s homework is to study and practice these skills)

How can I help my child be successful on SAT 10?

*Attendance is crucial every single day.
*Review all homework and practice tests with your child the night before each test.
*Be on time every morning.  Students should be at school no later than 7:50 AM each day.
*Be sure your child gets a good night’s rest each night before SAT 10.
*Be sure your child has a healthy breakfast at home or school.
*Encourage your child to do their best and try their hardest.
*Encourage your child to listen carefully.

Homework – Read 20 mins Monday – Thursday and record in agenda.  ALSO, students are bringing home SAT 10 and Children’s Progress review for homework this week.  Both sheets are due back this Thursday.  If homework isn’t completed on appropriate days, students will move clips and miss recess to complete.

Spelling –  We will be reviewing spelling and phonics skills for SAT 10.

Reading – We will be reviewing reading skills for SAT 10.

Math –  We will be reviewing math skills for SAT 10.

This week our “I can” statements are:

*I can gather information to answer questions.
*I can compare and contrast the most important points in texts.
*I can write a narrative from beginning to end.
*I can experiment with magnets to determine that objects can move without being touched.
*I can see the relationships in different length units.
*I can estimate and measure lengths of objects in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
*I can solve addition and subtraction problems involving lengths.

Homework –  Read 20 minutes Mon-Thurs.  Please be sure to use your child’s agenda as their reading log.  Students who do complete homework will move a clip and miss recess to read.

Spelling – This week we will be working on suffixes and “r” controlled sounds such as: ”are”, “air”, and “ar”. Spelling words will be in agendas as they are different depending on tiger time groups.  Our spelling test will be on Thursday this week since we will not be at school on Friday.

Reading – We will be reading Stirring Up Memories.  The skill for our story will be drawing conclusions. Please practice this skill as you read with your child at home this week.

Math – We will be working on estimating and measuring lengths of objects in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.  We will also be solving addition and subtraction problems involving lengths.  We will look for relationships in different length units.

***We will be out of school this Friday, April 6th in honor of the Good Friday Holiday.

This week our “I can” statements are:

*I can draw conclusions while reading.
*I can write a narrative from beginning to end.
*I can understand the rights, responsibilities, and qualities of good citizenship.

Math – We will be working on estimating and measuring lengths of objects in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.  We will also be solving addition and subtraction problems involving lengths.  We will look for relationships in different length units.

***Spring Pictures will be made this Thursday, March 29th.

2nd Grade News
March 5 – 9

This Friday we will be having our positive behavior celebration for the 3rd nine weeks. We are having a “50′s Sock Hop.” The kids are so excited! We have talked about how people dressed in the 50′s and they all have major plans for Friday.

NO homework this week!!!  :)

Spelling- This week we will be working on the sounds of g and c. Please check the agenda for your child’s words.

Reading – We will be reading the story The Moon. The skill for our story will be classifying information. Please practice this skill as you read with your child at home this week.

Math – We will be working on geometry,fractions, and measurement. Please continue to practice time, money, addition, and subtraction at home.

This week our “I can” statements are:

*I can read and comprehend informational text.
*I can make observations of changes in the moon’s appearance over time.
*I can research facts on a topic.
*I can write a narrative from beginning to end.
*I can see the relationships in different length units.
*I can estimate and measure lengths of objects in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
*I can solve addition and subtraction problems involving lengths.
