 Pre-K Report

May 14-18, 2012

Field Day: May 17- We will be outside for the majority of the day. Please dress your child appropriately for a day of fun physical activity! You may want to put sunscreen on your child as well.

Camp Learned –a-lot: May 21- We will be outside much of this day as well doing lots of different kindergarten readiness skills we have learned in a “camping” setting.

Water Day- May 23- Please send a bathing suit and towel (optional sunscreen) in your child’s backpack. We will do water day activities after lunch.

Pre-k Picnic: May 24- This day pre-k students do not come to school. We meet at Don Fox Park for a celebration with all LSSD Pre-k. We will be there from 9:00-12:00 and serving hot dogs and such for lunch. If you think you are able to make it, please sign up at the sign in book so we can get an estimated count. We will be handing out your child’s portfolio, progress report, and DVD at the picnic. You are responsible for your child this day. We hope to see you there! 

Theme Time:

This week finishing up hospital this week. We will introduce ambulance scenarios to extend out play for the week. Everyone is doing a great job with this theme!

Our Pre-K Performance is this Thursday, May 10 at 10:00.

** We still need 2 parents to ride the bus with us to the Library and Park on Tuesday. More volunteers are welcome to meet us there but 2 must ride the bus with us as a pre-k rule. Please let us know asap if interested. **

Theme Time:

This week we continue to play out problem solving scenarios in our hospital centers.

 Share and Tell: Every Friday your child may bring an item from home having to do with our theme, a favorite toy or something that interest them and share about it during our Share the News Activity.

Our next field trip will be Tuesday, May 8 to the Library and Don Fox Park.

 

 New Vocabulary:

 We continue to read books about hospitals and vets. We also we be learning about farm animals this week. We will leave names of animals found on the farm, their babies.

Think and Talk Time:

Ask your child to identify letters sounds. “What letter sound do you hear in the beginning of the word – cat?” “c”

What starts with a d sound? Ball or dog?

 

Tools of the Mind:

 As we the school year comes to a close, we are really encouraging children to write more independently. Most students are able to write their lines for a sentence on their own and many are writing the sounds that belong on those lines.

Pre-K and Kindergarten Registration is on May 3rd at College Hills Church of Christ 10:00-6:00. Take your packet to registration if you have not turned it in already.

***If you have not given us an updated shot record then you will need to turn that in by the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year for Kindergarten. This includes any shots your child might need AND their yearly physical. There are 2 separate signatures for this on your child’s immunization form. ***

There is No School this Friday for students.

We will also be conducting testing this week with Children’s Progress and Brigance.

*If you would like to order a field day t-shirt the money is due Monday, May 7. The cost is $10. Order forms are at the sign in shelf.*

Tools of the Mind:

 Make a Rhyme: This activity introduces simple rhymes and rhyming patterns. This one can easily be done at home. Talk with your child about a rhyme such at cat and hat.  The rhyming pattern is “-at”. Then ask your child to come up with different beginning sounds to form new rhyming words. Such as cat, hat, fat, sat, mat, pat, etc.

Tools of the Mind:

 Write Along is an extension of our message of the day. In write along, children write the daily message using scaffolded writing instead of watching the teacher. The children draw the lines and write the words on their own dry erase board. Children are able to write using the many letter sounds they know and using the sound map.

Tools of the Mind:

 Story Lab: Story Grammar

This activity is where we read a story several times throughout the week to become more familiar with it. Then we sequence the story using pictures and our puppet friend Fiona.

You can do this at home when reading a story with your child. Choose a book they are familiar with and talk about what happens in that story. Choose no more than 4-5 events in the story to talk about and put in correct order.

I’m so glad to be back! Thank you all for your kind words and well wishes! I have missed all my sweet friends! I’ve so pleased to hear all the wonderful things your children have done with Ms. Maggie and Ms. Erin while I was away. They were in such great hands!

Tools of the Mind:

 Letter Sound Recognition

Help your child learn the sounds of the letters by this fun game we play with our Mystery Question.

Find and object/picture and same the name of it and emphasize the first letter /sound/.

Example: boat: Say, /b/ /b/ /b/ boat

Then show your child 2 more objects and say them the same way. Make sure one of the objects starts with the same sound the first object does. Example: Fish and Book

Ask your child to say them with you and pick the one that matches or sounds the same as the first. So boat and book.

Our next field trip will be March 9 to the Lebanon Fire Department and the Lebanon Post Office. Please return field trip forms by Wednesday March 7.

New Vocabulary: We will be reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Our vocabulary word is cocoon.

4. Check the number of lines written compared to the number of words spoken
